I Don’t Do Football

After my shopping debacle yesterday, I wanted nothing to do with going to a store today. Instead I planned a nice quiet day at home. This is a tough time of year for me. Baseball season in this country is pretty much over. The Major League Baseball regular season ended 78 days ago and the World Series ended 51 days ago. Even the Arizona Fall League has been over for 29 days leaving me pretty much in baseball darkness. I tried calling DirecTV and complaining that as a subscriber to their Home Plate package I was frustrated and disappointed in the fact that they were not televising the Venezuela or Puerto Rico winter league games. What I found strange was that the customer support person on the other end stated I was the first person ever to suggest that they include winter baseball in the sports package. She then went off on a tangent suggesting that a sports fan such as me would probably benefit from the NFL Season Ticket. I had to set her straight, I don’t do football.

I am not sure where she got the misguided impression that I was a football fan. Nothing could be further from the truth. Baseball fans and Football fans are very different personalities and I could never be mistaken as a football guy. How could someone possibly follow a sport where they only play one game per week? And if that is not bad enough, football season is only 16 weeks long yet these teams insist on getting a week off. Talk about having a poor work ethic. I always thought MLB teams in the American League were soft when they didn’t require the pitcher to hit for him but football makes the American League teams look like iron men. Their players don’t even play the whole game. They come in either to defend against the other team or to play offense which is similar to being the designated hitter. I just don’t get this at all. If these players are so important why not have them play offense and defense. Do you think that Babe Ruth would have allowed someone to play the field for him or let someone else bat because he should save his energy? About the only thing I do understand about football is the notion of the tailgate party. But even that they had to rely on baseball food to get them through the game. You watch next time a tailgate party is shown during the commercial break. There will be hot dogs or brats on the grill and someone will have a beer and peanuts. I figure these guys are just like me, baseball fans that can’t find a real game on television and have to settle for going to a football game. I definitely need to start a petition to get DirecTV to broadcast a feed from the Mexican winter league.
