A Game for the Ages

The Diamondbacks have had their share of troubles this season offensively. This has shown itself through the fact that we’ve not even once gotten close to a Taco Bell Chalupa which is given when the team scores eight or more runs at any home game. The fans are starting to get a little frustrated with the lack of offense or maybe it is the lack of free food, I am not sure which. It’s not that the Diamondbacks are not scoring any runs; they are just scoring a few runs. It has been nearly a month since the Diamondbacks were able to put together more than a couple of runs in an inning. So when Micah Owings struggled in last night’s game and posted the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 7-1 lead it looked bleak for the hometown boys. Those fans with weak stomachs probably saw fit to turn off the television and radio rather than look at the carnage. I wanted to start to cry (that may have been a result of me kicking the television cabinet while barefoot).

When Micah left the game there was a sense of sadness coupled with an overcoating of relief. You just wanted the game to get over with and hope that tomorrow would be a better day. Something strange happened; the Diamondbacks bats began with a whimper and slowly built to a crescendo. The relief pitchers were magnificent holding the Pirates basically in check for the remainder of the game. The hitters took up the slack led by Tony Clark who belted a grand slam to bring the snakes back from the brink of death. I had to keep hitting the info button on my DirecTV remote to make sure I was still watching the Arizona Diamondbacks against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Trina was getting very irritated at the game since I kept reaching over and pinching her to see if this was real or a dream. When she complained I simply told her that she needed to toughen up and take one for the team for crying out loud. The Diamondbacks came trudged along inning after inning and finally took the lead. In the end it was a classic reversal of fortune worthy of a television movie of the week. The Diamondbacks were victorious winning 9-8. There was dancing in the streets and several cartwheels celebrating. The neighbors may not understand but this win was huge. This may just be the spark that it takes to start another one of those winning streaks that the Diamondbacks have shown so far this season.
