Have You Got the Time?

For the past week I have been attempting to piece together the Arizona Diamondbacks 2008 schedule. It’s like trying to discover the lost continent of Atlantis or something. You think there should be another continent but there are more superstitions and urban myths than there are hard facts as to where it is located. In the case of the Diamondbacks schedule, you have to follow the trail of bread crumbs then see if they all match up to make a complete loaf of bread. That all changed today when the Diamondbacks not only released an updated version of their home schedule but they also announced the away schedule including all game times. Finally the picture is starting to clear up and we can start to make plans for 2008.

The 2008 season starts similarly to the 2007 season with the Arizona Diamondbacks on the road for the first week. With the latest version of the schedule the Diamondbacks will be in Cincinnati Ohio to begin the year against Ken Griffey Jr. and the Reds. Hopefully Griffey will not be hurt for this series as he has been the past few when these two teams meet. This could be an especially interesting series as the Diamondbacks will face a coach from the past. Dusty Baker is now leading the Cincinnati ball club and he always seemed to have a knack of getting the most out of his players when they played against the Diamondbacks. Opening Day is an afternoon game in Ohio and a late morning game in Arizona. It starts at 11:10 AM on March 31 and will be seen on FSN Arizona as will all the Diamondbacks games in 2008. After an off day on April 1 (good no one wants to play on April Fools Day), the Diamondbacks will play on April 2 and April 3 in Cincinnati. The team will then travel to Colorado for a three game rematch of the NLCS against the Rockies. The Diamondbacks home opener will be Monday April 7 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. All week-day night games will again start at 6:40 PM as they have the past few years. After the Dodgers the Diamondbacks will host the Colorado Rockies to allow the Arizona fans to let the Rockies know we still remember that sweep from a couple of weeks ago. During the weekend Rockies series the Diamondbacks will implement their new weekend game times. Saturday evening games now start at 5:10 PM and Sunday afternoon games begin at 1:10 PM. Both of these are a change from years past.

The Diamondbacks feature 7 afternoon week-day home games for the 2008 season. These games will begin at 12:40 PM so plan those vacation days accordingly. Afternoon weekday games will feature the Los Angeles Dodgers, Houston Astros, Philadelphia Phillies, Oakland Athletics, Milwaukee Brewers, Pittsburgh Pirates, and St. Louis Cardinals. Interleague play will include home dates against the Kansas City Royals, Oakland Athletics, and Detroit Tigers. Away Interleague opponents include the Minnesota Twins and a visit to the World Champion Boston Red Sox. The 2008 season will end with the Diamondbacks playing at home with a three game series with the Colorado Rockies that could very well have play-off implications. Next season is already starting to frame up to an exciting time to be at Chase Field. I can’t wait, only 99 more days until pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training.
