Unit of Measure

Tonight the Arizona Diamondbacks opened a series against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park. After taking 2 of 3 from the Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona hopes to continue their winning ways in San Diego. This game features Randy Johnson in his third start of the season. The first two did not turn out quite like the Big Unit had wanted. In his first outing he got no decision but struggled with his command. The second start was at Chase Field against these same Padres and Johnson was tagged for 6 runs 4 of which were earned. This led to a 9-4 loss, Randy’s first of the season. The match-up for tonight’s game was the same as last Sunday with San Diego sending Randy Wolf to the mound. I was definitely looking forward to seeing this game. Unfortunately I almost missed it.

Fox Sports Network is the exclusive home to all Arizona Diamondbacks games for the 2008 season. They are also home to the Phoenix Suns basketball telecasts. The Suns are locked in a play-off series with the San Antonio Spurs and the basketball game not the baseball game was scheduled to be telecast on FSN Arizona. For the past several days Fox Sports has been working with their broadcasting partners to find an alternative to allow them to show both the baseball and the basketball games. As of last night they finally had agreement with each provider to televise the Diamondbacks game on FSN Arizona Plus. On DirecTV this is channel 669 while on DISH Network it is channel 451. Initially Cox Communications had declined to participate but after a huge public outcry they relented and the Diamondbacks can be found on channel 7 on the Cox Cable system.

I think I can speak for Diamondbacks fans everywhere when I say how grateful we are to the Fox Sports Network and the service providers for making this happen. And while the telecast was in standard definition rather than high definition it was still awesome! The fan’s enthusiasm was enhanced by the fact that the Diamondbacks behind great pitching took the game by a score of 5-1. Randy Johnson looked as dominating as he did last season before his injured back sidelined him. The Big Unit threw 6 innings allowing 3 hits and walking 2 batters. He allowed one run while striking out 7 lowering his ERA to 2.70. As if that was not enough, Randy also collected a hit raising his batting average to .250. If this keeps up maybe Johnson will be battling teammate Micah Owings for the 2008 Silver Slugger award. Ok, maybe night. Still it was a sweet win and a much better outcome than that basketball thing that was on FSN Arizona tonight.
