Top 50 Greatest Moments

The Arizona Diamondbacks are currently celebrating their tenth anniversary as a franchise. I know, I know, this is the 11th season they have played but no one would believe me. They kept saying 1998-2008 means 10 years. No one takes the time to stop and count. I am not here to debate whether that is right or wrong; I am just going to remind myself of the first rule of scuba diving, “1. Don’t forget to breathe.” As part of the celebration of baseball in the desert, Fox Sports Arizona is recognizing the 50 greatest moments in Arizona Diamondbacks history. Beginning with the July 19 game, the network began showing these moments as they make their way to the most memorable moment in team history.

The moments have all been identified and most of the order has been set but the final tally will be left to the fans. Beginning on August 1 and running for the entire month, fans can log onto the Diamondbacks web site and vote for their favorite moments of the top 10. The results will be calculated and the final order of these top 10 will be unveiled.

This should be interesting. I think you could probably already name the number 1 moment in Diamondbacks history even before the voting begins. I am going to completely surprised and flabbergasted if the top moment is anything but Luis Gonzalez’s hit in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series bringing the world championship to Phoenix. But what about the other moments, what will they be? I wrote to FSN and asked if they could give me a list of the 50 top moments. They gladly sent me the list and I thought it would be interesting to post them here and see if anyone had any comments on moments they missed or the order which they are listed. With the exception of the top 10, these are all in the order that they will appear in the countdown.

  1. I think we all agree that Game 7 of 2001 WS is the greatest moment in Dback’s history. So I would like to add 2 more events from that game. First it would be B2 flyover before the game. Second would be Mark Grace getting on base to start the rally in the 9th inning against Mr. Automatic.

  2. Jeff Summers

And what 2 moments would you leave off to get back to 50?

While we are on the subject of adding moments, I think last night’s near perfect game and game saving catch would warrant inclusion if this list occurred after the season.

  3. If you want to include this year then I would add Owings pinch hit home run.

I think one item that I would drop from the list is #48.

I would combine Mark Grace with “Tony Womack’s double to tie Game 7 in 9th inning (November 4, 2001)” as rally in 9th inning.

Also I think triple play should be higher than #22

  4. Base on the choices given this is my top 10 list:

    1. Luis Gonzalez wins the Series (November 4, 2001)

    2. 1st Regular Season game in Franchise History (March 31, 1998)

    3. Randy Johnson Perfect Game (May 18, 2004)

    4. Brandon Webb 42-inning scoreless streak (2007)

    5. D-backs named expansion team (March 9, 1995)

    6. D-backs clinch Playoffs with win over Giants (Sept. 24, 1999)

    7. Randy Johnson 20 K vs Reds (May 8, 2001)

    8. Tony Womack’s double to tie Game 7 in 9th inning (November 4, 2001)

    9. Diamondbacks clinch NL post-season (September 28, 2007)

    10. Tony Womack singles home Danny Bautista to win NLDS (October 14, 2001)

If I could change the list I would replace number 10 with triple play.
