Hats and Other Head Games

There are few things that will tip my wife over more quickly than me telling her I am in desperate need of some new piece of Arizona Diamondbacks merchandise. Usually this results in yet another lengthy lecture where she tells me that I already own every piece of Diamondbacks merchandise ever made.

This of course is an exaggeration. I know of at least four items that I don’t have and that’s even before I go out to the Arizona Diamondbacks web store or visit the Chase Field Team Shop. I’ve told her a million times that she shouldn’t exaggerate.

The Continued Saga of Brandon Webb

Probably the most overused question during Spring Training with the Arizona Diamondbacks is, “How is Brandon Webb?” When staff ace Webb went down against the Colorado Rockies on Opening Day so did the hopes and dreams of Diamondbacks fans.

Throughout the 2009 season we were told Webb would be back shortly. Just a little rest and strength training is all he needed. This of course led to a glimmer of hope that was dashed with the news that Webb would need shoulder surgery.

Sometimes Being a Fan is a Problem

It’s funny, I look back at the last 13 seasons of being an Arizona Diamondbacks fan and I realized my children have literally grown up at Bank One Ballpark/Chase Field. At Opening Day in 1998 I was in the stands with my wife and my son who was less than a year old.

Now in 2010 my son is 12 years old and Chase Field is like a second home. He knows most of the ushers on a first name basis and lives in the kids’ zone on the upper deck. He has a knack of being in the right place at the right time appearing on dbTV with game hosts Mike and Vanessa.

They’re Here, My Season Tickets Are Here!

There are certain times of year that are absolutely torture for a mailman. There is of course catalog season where they have to stuff an abundance of printed catalogs into each mail recipient’s mailbox and let’s not forget the holiday season with all the cards, letters, and gifts that are sent around the country.

In our neighborhood there is also a third time of year that strikes fear into the heart of the mail man; the delivery of Arizona Diamondbacks Season Tickets.

The Waiting and the Worrying Begins

Spring Training has been underway for nearly a month. Pitchers and catchers are working hard to build up arm strength and hitters are putting in extra practice in the batting cages honing their timing.

From a front office perspective Season Ticket renewal has been completed. The FanFest has been held at Chase Field and by all accounts was another success. The promotional schedule has been released and the ticket office is now selling individual game tickets.

Reynolds Inked to Long-Term Deal

During FanFest at Chase Field last month Arizona Diamondbacks General Manager Josh Byrnes commented that the Diamondbacks were interested in signing a few of their young core players to long-term contracts.

Specifically he named Justin Upton and Mark Reynolds as two players they would be talking with. Since that time Upton has signed a six-year contract extension and Reynolds confirmed his representatives are speaking with the Diamondbacks about a long-term deal.

Diamondbacks Sign Benson as Insurance

Kris Benson was the first overall pick in the baseball amateur draft in 1996 by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Benson made his way through the Pirates minor league system and became a dominating pitcher for the team.

At the time he was one of the most sought after pitchers in all of baseball. In 2004 the Pirates traded Benson to the New York Mets. He pitched in 11 games for the Mets that season going 4-4 with a 4.50 ERA. That performance earned him a free agent contract with New York.

Sometimes Spring Means Something More

One of the consistent themes we hear over and over from both players and coaches is how meaningless Spring Training games are. We are reminded that the goal of Spring Training is to prepare for the season and the outcome of the game is secondary.

As fans we all nod in understanding while in the back of our minds we wonder whether that is just lip service or if Spring Training really doesn’t mean anything. I had almost bought into the argument that is until today’s Diamondbacks game.

Making a Run for the Border

Each Spring Training, the Arizona Diamondbacks schedule one Cactus League home game south of the border in Mexico. This has become a very popular tradition with both the team and the fans.

It is usually a split squad game and the Diamondbacks attempt to send players with some tie to the country. This year the game is being played in Hermosillo Mexico against the Colorado Rockies.
