Diary of a Diehard

Although there are only four games remaining in the 2010 regular season, things are active with regards to the Arizona Diamondbacks pitching staff. This news covers not only those on the major league staff but also pitchers in Tucson attending Instructional League.

Let’s begin with the major league roster. Starter Ian Kennedy made his final start of the season last night against the San Francisco Giants. Kennedy pitched well going five innings allowing just five hits.

It was a milestone of sorts for injured Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon Webb. This particular milestone had little to do with his on field results or lack thereof.

Webb had requested a meeting with the Arizona Diamondbacks front office to discuss his future and in particular the remaining week of the 2010 season.

Diamondbacks closer Juan Gutierrez threw a 94 MPH fastball to Dodgers first baseman James Loney. Loney hit a pop fly in foul territory. Arizona third baseman Tony Abreu caught the ball to close out the final home stand for the Diamondbacks.

After an off day today the Diamondbacks will embark on the final road trip of the 2010 season. They will play a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park before ending the year with a three-game series in Los Angeles against the Dodgers.

For the second consecutive year the Arizona Diamondbacks planned a post-game activity for their loyal season ticket holders. It was yet another way for the team to thank those fans who have stood by them during this difficult season.

The activity would begin shortly after the “Shirts Off Our D-backs” on-field presentation. The “Shirts Off Our D-Backs” promotion has been going on all weekend allowing fans the ability to purchase scratch-off tickets to win a jersey from one of the players or coaches.

In a tradition that began in 1998, the final weekend series at Chase Field is designated as Fandemonium. These two games allow the Diamondbacks organization and the players an opportunity to thank the loyal fans for their support throughout the year.

It is always festive at Fandemonium. It is a chance to celebrate the excitement of baseball and to bid a warm farewell to the baseball season before the doors close until next April. Besides the baseball game there are also other activities at Fandemonium.

Going into this final home stand logical thinking would suggest the Diamondbacks may win two games out of the six. The Colorado Rockies entered the series as perhaps the hottest team in baseball or at least in the NL West.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are always tough for the Diamondbacks and have had success dating back to 2008 when the Dodgers knocked Arizona out of first place and ultimately out of the play-offs. Many point to that series in early September 2008 as the turning point where the Diamondbacks began their death roll to the bottom of the standings.

When the Arizona Diamondbacks returned home from a disastrous road trip where they went just 2-8, there didn’t seem to be anything to look forward to for the final six home games of the season.

The Diamondbacks must have sensed the malaise of its fan base. The team took the ten-game road trip to do a little housekeeping at Chase Field to begin to build excitement to 2011 and especially the fact that Phoenix will be hosting the 2011 Major League Baseball All-Star game.

“Don’t quit your day job.”. Never has my father’s advice been more appropriate than it was today. Less than 24 hours after I boldly predicted the Arizona Diamondbacks would name interim General Manager Jerry Dipoto the permanent GM, the team scheduled a press conference at Chase Field to name Kevin Towers to the job.

So with hat in hand I come before you to apologize for my complete lack of prognosticating ability. This should also clear up any misconception that I have any clue as to what is happening with the Diamondbacks front office.
