Diamondbacks Cut Ties with Four

At the deadline the Arizona Diamondbacks declined to tender contracts to four of their players allowing them to become free agents. The four players non-tendered included pitchers Blaine Boyer and DJ Carrasco along with infielder Augie Ojeda and outfielder Ryan Church.

Perhaps the most disappointing of the four was seeing Ojeda’s name included. He had become a staple on the Diamondbacks roster being able to play several positions in the infield. His gritty nature had made Ojeda a fan favorite, which led to him being voted as the final bobble head.

The Diamondbacks signed Geoff Blum earlier this off-season which signified the possible end of Ojeda’s tenure; a fact validated by the team non-tendering him a contract. Ojeda will likely catch on with another team. Rumors are that the Texas Rangers are already contacting Ojeda’s representatives.

Boyer and Carrasco were part of a bullpen last season that was the worst in baseball; one with the third worst ERA in baseball history. It should not come as too much of a shock that General Manager Kevin Towers continues to shed pitchers in what will be a completely rebuilt staff next season.

Carrasco along with Church and Bobby Crosby were part of a trade that sent catcher Chris Snyder to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Now just four months later all the players in that trade are no longer with the Diamondbacks. Obviously Arizona just wanted Snyder out of the organization regardless of who they received in return.

Although the Diamondbacks cut ties with these players, team officials did suggest they may consider bringing one or more of them back as free agents if there was a match when Spring
Training begins next February.

Honestly the only way that would happen would be if Arizona could not fill roster holes elsewhere and from what we saw this past year that seems inconceivable that these are the best available players on the market.
