Much like a kid outside a candy store, I am forced to press my nose against the glass and wonder what it might have been like if I were able to go inside. The interior of the store is lined with happy children holding up their favorite candy to the cashier who gleefully takes their money giving the signal to begin enjoying their new purchase.
The baseball equivalent to this is the first day of Fantasy Camp. Right now there are 50 people arriving in Tucson Arizona to take part in the sixth annual Fantasy Camp. For the next seven days they will be living out the dream of every Diamondbacks fan.
Camp participants will be staying at the resort the team stays at when in Tucson. They will travel to Tucson Electric Park where they will enter the Diamondbacks clubhouse to find a locker with their name on it.
Inside these lockers will be a complete Diamondbacks uniform complete with their name and number stitched on the back. Hundreds of photographs will be taken as each camper goes through the locker like a kid on Christmas morning.
Shortly thereafter they will take their place on the field alongside such Diamondbacks greats from the 2001 World Championship team as Matt Williams, Steve Finley, Mark Grace, Greg Colbrunn, David Dellucci, Greg Swindell, Reggie Sanders, Damian Miller, and of course Luis Gonzalez.
The campers will be divided into teams and will spend the week playing baseball on the fresh cut grass of TEP. Camp will conclude next weekend with the annual campers versus staff game where fans will play alongside some of the greatest players to wear a Diamondbacks jersey.
I’ve always dreamed of going to Fantasy Camp and each year I try to drop subtle and not so subtle hints to my wife in hopes that she will get the hint. So far I haven’t been successful but I’ll continue to dream about the day I too can be at Fantasy Camp.
