This Borders on Sacrilege

Chase Field, the home of the Arizona Diamondbacks, is owned and operated by the Maricopa County Stadium District. Although the team has their offices there, they are merely the primary tenants for the venue.

During the off-season the Stadium District is able to book other events to utilize the structure. Through the years there have been numerous events held there. Some seem like a natural fit while others leave you scratching your heads wondering how creative these guys really are.

Being an Involved Parent

My family has long held the belief that baseball is the most important thing in my life. I keep reassuring them that is not the case and how I definitely would choose family over baseball at least I think I would.

Still no one is willing to test that theory. When my daughter decided to get married in April of last year, the anxiety levels around our house went up dramatically. The bride-to-be and my wife were stressed out because of all the wedding details that had to be planned. As the father of the bride I should have been stressed about how much this was going to cost me (by the way, weddings are a lot more expensive than Season Tickets and you don’t even get game day giveaways.)

T-Minus One Month and Counting

I am almost giddy with anticipation. Looking at the calendar I realized we are exactly one month away. Going through the shopping centers I am already starting to see signs of the upcoming holiday.

The red decorations filled with hearts abound along with flowers and chocolates. I can understand the decorations and hearts but the flowers and chocolates kind of confuse me. When exactly did someone decide that you needed flowers and chocolates to celebrate pitchers and catchers reporting to Spring Training?

Diamondbacks Add to Bench Strength

When Diamondbacks General Manager Kevin Towers announced the team was likely finished with their roster overhaul, many wondered if he truly meant that or whether this was just a lull in the storm.

That question was answered today as the Arizona Diamondbacks signed utility man Willie Bloomquist to a one-year deal worth a reported $1.05 million. Bloomquist who played for the Kansas City Royals and the Cincinnati Reds last season adds versatility to manager Kirk Gibson’s bench.

A Fan Wherever You Go

As I laid on the gurney the nurses were going about their business getting things ready before wheeling me into the operating room. I lay there watching them connect various pieces of machinery to my to monitor my vital signs.

The “procedure” was supposed to be relatively simple and I should be back to normal in a few days or weeks. I’m not a big fan of the medical community as a whole so this reassurance didn’t leave me feeling all that great. But after a recent set of tests I knew I had little choice but to go through this.

Kris Benson Calls It Quits

With the Diamondbacks starting pitching in shambles in 2010, the team looked everywhere for help. One potential solution came in the form of former first overall draft pick Kris Benson.

Benson came up in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization and was their staff ace for several seasons. He was traded to the New York Mets where he had some success before injuring his arm.

The Loneliest Day of the Year

Much like a kid outside a candy store, I am forced to press my nose against the glass and wonder what it might have been like if I were able to go inside. The interior of the store is lined with happy children holding up their favorite candy to the cashier who gleefully takes their money giving the signal to begin enjoying their new purchase.

The baseball equivalent to this is the first day of Fantasy Camp. Right now there are 50 people arriving in Tucson Arizona to take part in the sixth annual Fantasy Camp. For the next seven days they will be living out the dream of every Diamondbacks fan.

The Continuing Saga of Nick Bierbrodt

Everyone loves the story of Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton. The fairy-tale like ending of a former first round draft pick who battles personal demons, overcomes them, and becomes a success on the baseball field sounds like something straight out of a Hollywood script.

Fans everywhere watched as Hamilton led his team into the 2010 play-offs and ultimately to the World Series. And while the story didn’t have as happy an ending as it could have with a World Series ring, it was still one of the great storylines of the season.
