A Plan for Stopping the Insanity

Baseball is known for being filled with unique personalities and quirky characters. I guess that should kind of be expected from grown men playing a little boys game. Through the ages some of these quirks have been passed down from generation to generation.

You don’t talk about a no-hitter because as sure as you do the baseball gods will be angered and a ball will fall for a hit when it had no business being one. Pitchers should never step on the foul line when taking or leaving the field. To do so would tempt fate and likely crush your earned run average.

Fans can laugh and scoff at this suggesting there is nothing to these superstitions; but that would seem somewhat hypocritical considering the number of rally caps that are worn when our team is behind or wearing that thread-worn “lucky shirt” or “lucky hat” to help our team win.

Superstition and rituals are part of what makes baseball what it is. It allows us to think back at a simpler time where rubbing a lucky rabbit’s foot gave us a competitive edge or brought good luck where none should have existed.

“Well, Nuke’s scared because his eyelids are jammed and his old man’s here. We need a live roo– is it a live rooster? We need a live rooster to take the curse off Jose’s glove. And nobody seems to know what to get Millie or Jimmy for their wedding present. Is that about right? … We’re dealing with a lot of sh–.”

Rather than discount those silly things we did or superstitions we believed in, I think we should collectively embrace it and now is the perfect time. The Arizona Diamondbacks find themselves in what could best be described as a death spiral. They have lost 23 consecutive road games after their defeat against the San Francisco Giants and 14 consecutive games overall. The schedule shows the team has one just a single game in the month of June and that was 17 days ago.

It’s time for each of us to call upon whatever voodoo we know. Collect those things that brought us luck and collectively call upon whatever we need to call upon to help break this curse. I’m calling for every Diamondbacks fan to come together either at the stadium or remotely with those lucky items and let’s will this team to victory.

If this doesn’t work, we may all have to gather outside of Chase Field and hold a bonfire to destroy anything that has bad mojo. Desperate times call for desperate measures. We can no longer sit idly by and hope this streak will end. Come on, who’s with me on this?
