Season Ticket Arrival

Every year I eagerly away the postman. Every year the postman becomes more and more frightened seeing an aging man chasing him down the street yelling, “DID I GET THEM? DID I GET THEM?!” Since this has been a 21-year tradition, you would think that the postal workers would be accustomed to this. Oddly, we seem to get a new mail carrier about every year at this time. That has to be a coincidence doesn’t it?

You may be asking yourself, what would drive an otherwise relatively sane man to act like a crazed lunatic? I can answer that with three simple words, “season”, “ticket”, “delivery”. Every March the Arizona Diamondbacks will send season ticket booklets with tickets to all the games purchased.

Think of it this way, it is a magical envelope that contains all your hopes and dreams in 83 neat little packages. To a baseball fan, it is the equivalent to opening a Wonka bar and finding a golden ticket. You know that when you tear out that first ticket and hand it to the guest relations Diamondbacks employee that it is the equivalent of Willy Wonka singing Pure Imagination while strolling by a river made of chocolate and taking a bite out of flowers made of candy.

When the package finally arrives, I gather the family around the dinner table and open the envelope removing the contents. I cannot say for sure, but I thought I heard angels singing and a heavenly light descent upon the ticket booklets.

They are amazing! Each one of these tickets could hold a magical experience where we see something historical happen. It could be a no hitter or a perfect game. It could be a player hitting 4 home runs in a game or hitting for the cycle. This could be the game that clinches a play-off berth or if the planets and stars all align, it could mark the path to a World Championship.

That is the wonder of a book of season tickets, you could see anything. A tear of joy rolled down my cheek thinking about what might be in store when these tickets are used. There is no greater joy or time of excitement than when the Season Tickets arrive.

Once we began taking tickets out, it means we are one game closer to the end of the season. But it also means we are one game wiser and we have collected one more game’s worth of memories that will last us a lifetime. That is the joy of Season Ticket delivery.
